A Heads Up with CaCo García

With Covid-19 lockdowns worldwide and health authorities urging people to self-isolate and practice social distancing on a massive scale as part of an enormous effort to #FlattenTheCurve of this global pandemic … we are reaching out to industry friends, colleagues, associates, partners, etc., and asking them to share their #StayAtHome and #QuarantineAndChill activities with us during this extraordinary time.

CaCo García resides in Madrid (Spain) and is currently working as a lighting designer, programmer and operator for many bands and music artists, as well as for large format events. He offers lessons and tutorials on lighting design and programming.

Robe: Where are you right now?

CaCo: At home, approximately 35km from the city centre of Madrid, Spain.

Robe: How are things emerging from the lockdown in your region / country?

CaCo: In general, very slowly. After a short recovery, everything is getting worse and we fear the worst. Our sector has suffered a total shutdown!

Robe: How did you spend your time during lockdown?

CaCo: The lockdown started while I was on tour in Mexico, then I travelled to Madrid and spent 6 weeks alone – as travel was not allowed – then joined my family in Salamanca … and made the most of that time with my wife and 1-year old son.

I also took the opportunity to get ahead on with study work between designs and pre-programming sessions.

Robe: What are your biggest concerns / considerations as lockdowns ease worldwide?

CaCo: Since restrictions have loosened, my biggest concern has been to go back to the lockdown situation. It is essential to take all the security measures seriously to prevent this from happening again! I hope the vaccine is available soon!

Robe: Do you have any thoughts / predictions about how and when live events and the industry will re-start?

CaCo: There are many predictions, but as soon as the situations arrive, they are gone because our industry is living through a very unstable and difficult moment.

Robe: Going forward, how do you think live events and the entertainment technology industry will change in a post-Covid 19 world before there is a vaccine widely available?

CaCo: I think it will take a long time to be able to live-and-breathe events in our industry the way we used to! We are already doing streaming, and this will continue for TV, social media and non-presential formats. Hopefully, when the vaccine is available, we will recover our regular day-to-day lives little by little.

Robe: How sustainable do you think these changes will be?

CaCo: We are forced to reinvent ourselves to survive, we have no other option. The show must go on!!

Robe: Has anyone / anything particularly inspired you since this crisis started?

CaCo: I believe that these days more than ever, all the medical staff, police, firefighters, etc. who have been in the front line of the battle with no rest deserve our gratitude and recognition for their huge effort and dedication. THANK YOU!

Robe: Own question / answer / message of solidarity or something you’d like to say?

CaCo: As I said before, it is time to reinvent yourself and not to give in to pessimism! Wishing everyone lots of strength! We WILL get through this!
